ChatGPT Hits Record Low as AI Chatbot Traffic Splinters Five Ways
Statcounter's April 2026 numbers say ChatGPT lost share for the third straight month — and Gemini's edging toward double digits.
OpenAI's chatbot, which a year ago accounted for 84.21% of all AI chatbot referrals to websites, slipped to 76.85% in April. That's its lowest share since Statcounter began tracking the category. The data, released May 7, marks the third consecutive month of decline.
Google's Gemini took the largest piece of what ChatGPT lost. Its share rose from 8.65% in March to 9.00% in April, putting it on track to break 10% within the next two reporting cycles. A year ago, Gemini sat at 2.31%. The 4x in twelve months has been steady rather than viral — month after month of single-digit gains compounding.
Perplexity, which spent most of 2025 as the clear number-two before Gemini overtook it in March, recovered slightly. Its share moved from 7.07% to 7.73%. Microsoft's Copilot also stopped bleeding, climbing from 3.19% to 3.76%. Claude went the other way: down from 2.91% to 2.66%, giving back some of the surge it picked up in March.
That March spike — Claude briefly hit 3.6% in week 12 — was widely tied to the "QuitGPT" movement that followed OpenAI's Pentagon partnership announcement. The April pullback suggests the protest traffic was more reactive than structural. Claude still sits well above its January baseline of 0.92%, but the doubling pace didn't hold.
"The AI chatbot referral market is entering a new phase," said Aodhan Cullen, Statcounter's CEO. "ChatGPT's share has now fallen for three consecutive months to a record low."
What's actually moving:
| Chatbot | March 2026 | April 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 78.16% | 76.85% | −1.31pp |
| Gemini | 8.65% | 9.00% | +0.35pp |
| Perplexity | 7.07% | 7.73% | +0.66pp |
| Copilot | 3.19% | 3.76% | +0.57pp |
| Claude | 2.91% | 2.66% | −0.25pp |
The reading isn't "ChatGPT is dying." Three-quarters of all AI-driven web traffic still comes from one platform. The reading is "the next quarter is now genuinely contested" — and brands that optimized purely for ChatGPT visibility in 2025 are watching that bet become less sufficient each month.
For marketers, the practical takeaway is uncomfortable: there's no longer one AI channel to win. The five-way split means content that surfaces in ChatGPT but not Gemini is leaving roughly one in ten clicks on the table. Content that surfaces in neither Gemini nor Perplexity is missing nearly one in five. This is the gap that AI brand visibility monitoring exists to close — and it's why Google adding a native "AI Assistant" channel to GA4 (also this month) is necessary but not sufficient. GA4 will tell you which AI sent the traffic. It won't tell you what that AI is saying about you to the next user who asks.
The next Statcounter update lands early June. If Gemini crosses 10% and ChatGPT slips under 75%, the second-place gap closes meaningfully and the AI-search market becomes genuinely multi-polar for the first time.
